Girl with Butterfly

For Sale at My ACEO Gallery

Hope you enjoy this spontaneous little drawing I created today. I started with a pencil sketch. I knew I wanted to draw a pretty face, but wasn't sure how to start. I took a deep breath, softened my gaze on the paper and started with some eyelashes and then an eye. The girls face and hair just started to take shape on its own, and I could see in my mind that there should be a flower behind her ear.
She was looking at something, but what was it? It was quite close to her, and with the flower in her hair...it just had to be a butterfly =) Well, I just couldn't get the picture of the position of the butterfly in my mind...so I went and looked up a photo and that helped me tremendously. In no time the butterfly was perfectly perched upon her fingers.
The pencil sketch was beautiful, but I wanted it to have more substance and I drew over the lines with black ink.
I have to say that there is more than a vision behind this type of spontaneous art. There is a feeling, and the images seem to flow through that feeling onto the paper. Its almost magic, and I am quite amazed and delighted each time that happens!

Happy Monday =) Kathryn

Paint Party Friday - Upcycled ACEOs

Baby Sea Turtle ACEO Painting For Sale

Purple Hummingbird ACEO Painting for Sale

Pastel Dragonfly ACEO Painting ON SALE NOW

I am having so much fun creating ACEOs from recycled cereal box material. I took my parrots out on the porch this afternoon, and drew and painted while they soaked up the sun =) I had already cut up a Big Special K box into 2.5x3.5in pieces, and primed them with acrylic paints of different colors. Today, I let my free spirit fly and these three ACEOs are the result.

Hope you are enjoying the party! Can't wait to see what everyone else is up to =) Happy Easter!! Kathryn

ps-If you're not yet familiar with ACEOs, they are Art Cards and you can find more info about them at my ACEO Gallery

Paint Party Friday - WIP

I guess Friday comes pretty fast, lol, because its 9pm and I have just remembered to join the party! I have been working on a portrait of my niece all week. Its a gift, and I don't want to show it just yet.
So, I have a painting in progress to show and tell about. Its a 4x6in watercolor and acrylic mixed media painting that I started a couple of months ago...and it has been sitting on the piano waiting for the perfect moment to realize itself ;)

You can see the fairy with the bird in the bubble, but can you see what else is emerging from this magical scene?

Please come join the fun and see all the great weekly posts of other artists....just click the button link below. Thanks so much, Kathryn

Shelle's Fabulous Art

Yesterday, the mail brought me my lovely gift from Sunshine Shelle's Celebrate Oz Giveaway! A happy dance was done by both Erick and I...excited to receive a gift package from sunny Australia =)

The "Witchy Poo" ACEO is awesomely witchy, and I simply love it!! Thanks so much, Shelle, for being so generous as to give away 5 fab ACEOS to 5 lucky winners, Yay!
You'll see in the pic that it was safely tucked within one of Shelle's notecards, which happens to have one of my very favorite designs on it...the kitty holding onto a star. The other little piece of art is Shelle's cute business card, and "Witchy Poo" was lovingly tucked into a fabulous shiny, coppery bag =) Thank you Shelle; I cherish it all!
Pop by her Etsy Shop to see more great art from this sweet and talented lady.

Paint Party Friday - ACEO Playing Card Deck

So much going on this week, I almost forgot about PPF entirely!...but so glad I made it =)

This parrot painting is one of my recent works. I have submitted the image for a project in one of my eBay groups, Art Cards, Editions and Originals...or better known as the ACEO group. The group has been creating ACEO-sized (2.5x3.5in)playing card decks the last few years using the art of group members. These parrots will be on the 2 of Diamonds in the 2011 deck. I'm so excited to be a part of this fun project, and can't wait to see the finished deck with everyone's great art!

I have 5 Eclectus parrots. This painting is done from a picture of Cherry and Junior.

Eclectus parrots are famous for being sexually dimorphic, which means that the male and female are different colors. Most parrot species do not have this trait. That's your lesson on parrots for today, LOL!

The painting was done in Acrylics on Susan Scheewe 185# watercolor paper, and it measures 2.5 x 3.5 inches. I don't think I'll be putting this original up for sale. It is too near and dear to my heart =)

Happy PPF!! I'm swamped, but will try to visit as many as I can this week ;)
